Boys and Vaccines: Public Service Announcment

August 15, 2021

by Sean Kullman

Data from the Centers for Disease Controls reporting system (VAERS) showed boys 12 to 24 years-of-age were 7.8x to 8.3x more likely to experience myocarditis/pericarditis following dose 2 of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. Males 25 to 29 years-of-age were 6.2x to 8.4x more likely to have an episode.

Dose 1 reactions are much lower in number but still show a greater disparity for boys 12 to 29 years-of-age who are 6x to 7.5x more likely to experience an episode. GIBM is following the information closely and looking at more data.

The greater surge in episodes happens after receiving a second dose.

Although experiencing myocarditis/pericarditis is a very low risk, it's important to understand the reasons the disparities exist, particularly for boys between the ages of 12 to 17, 18 to 24, and 25 to 29.

To see the CDC presentation, please click here. The information is on slides 25-29. We also recommend reading the Summary on slide 44. The Summary probably should have emphasized the boy-disparity more prominently.
